You are what you eat
The kind of food you eat will definitely affect the development of your teeth. Many people will naturally adhere to dietary restrictions or be more health-conscious as they age, which is of course, good for your teeth. Consuming sugary or starchy food is very harmful for your teeth over time. The carbohydrates in these substances will ferment, causing the bacteria in your mouth to produce acid. This acid will in turn break down the enamel in your teeth, eventually leading to tooth decay.
If you thought sugary or starchy food are the worst, think again. Carbonated drinks are actually the biggest catalysts of tooth decay. Drinking colas or sports drinks may bring about worse effects than the intake of sugary food, as they increase the acidity in your mouth.
It is also not encouraged to snack frequently because this is another contributing factor for increased acidity levels in the oral cavity. It would be good for you to avoid hard food such as ice as well.
Eating sugarless gum, for example, is a good way to go. The chewing action helps to secret more saliva which will protect and cleanse your teeth. Saliva also neutralizes the acidity in your mouth and ensures a cleaner oral cavity.
Wear and tear
Our teeth undergo chewing, gnashing, biting and all sorts of actions. It is a wonder they never crumble under these activities, especially since we have to eat everyday. We have to take the effort to keep our teeth in tip-top condition. In doing so, we can prevent wear and tear. Yes, our teeth may see wear and tear too. Teeth that have been through fillings or root canals are more susceptible and weak to wear and tear because they do not have the intact structure of natural teeth.
Some people who grind their teeth when they sleep are also more vulnerable to wear and tear. Those who clench their teeth may face this problem too, on top of the stress and anxiety that they are already experiencing. Clenching your teeth causes wear and tear as it affects the biting surface of your teeth and may lead to tooth decay.
Keeping your teeth healthy
It is mandatory to brush at least twice everyday for at least 2 minutes each time. On top of that, you have to floss everyday so as to lower the amount of bacteria in your mouth.
Visit your dentist every 6 months to clean and repair your teeth. Dental appointments are also good opportunities for you to seek help when you need them.
There is no shortcut to resolving dental problems or to prevent them from happening in future. Keeping these good habits in check might be a difficult thing to do but it will surely see good results.
