Handling Dental Emergencies
A cracked or broken tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm salty water to clean the area
Keep area as clean as possible with gentle tooth brushing and flossing
For pain, toothache drops may help temporarily
Most importantly, call Maven Dental Duncraig as soon as possible.
Badly bitten lip or tongue
Clean the area gently with a cloth and apply cold compresses to reduce any swelling. If bleeding doesn’t stop, go to hospital emergency room immediately.
Objects caught between teeth
Never use a sharp object to attempt to remove any objects. Try gentle flossing to dislodge the objects, and if this doesn’t work, call Maven Dental Duncraig.
A knocked-out tooth
Our emergency dentists are often able to successfully replant a knocked-out tooth if you act quickly and calmly follow these instructions:
Handle the tooth carefully, touching only the crown (chewing surface) to minimalise injury to the root
Clean tooth with plain water, no chemicals, and don’t dry tooth
Re-position tooth in socket – the sooner the tooth is replaced, the more likely it will survive. Place the tooth back in the socket where it’s been knocked out, pushing it in gently, or holding it with fingers or by carefully closing bite.
Keep the tooth moist at all times – don’t allow the tooth to dry outside the mouth. If tooth can’t be placed back in the socket, store it in milk or in your mouth (next to cheek).
Call your local dentist or orthodontist ASAP – take your tooth into a dental professional as soon as possible, preferably within half an hour.
Gently rinse mouth with warm salty water
Carefully floss to ensure no debris is stuck between teeth
Do not put aspirin or painkiller against the tooth or gums, as it may burn gum tissue
If pain persists, proprietary toothache drops can help, but best to call Maven Dental Duncraig as soon as possible to book an appointment.
